Nairobi - Despite the order to do so, matatus have not moved out of the Nairobi CBD. Here's why.
Governor Evans Kidero ordered the drivers to leave the Central Business District CBD after there were accusations that they were blocking businesses in the city.
Shop owners have complained that the matatus are blocking their shops and ruining business and that unless they are spared, they will not pay land rates.
The matatus though have had other ideas.
They claim that they cannot leave the CBD because they belong there by right.
They also further claim that thy voted for the Governor in the 2013 General Elections on the premise that he would protect their interests.
" The Governor owes us protection from matatu drivers and touts who are a problem for our businesses," a trader interviewed by News24 said.
" We pay alot in tax, security and rates. We deserve better," the trader added.
Kidero was optimistic that the matatus would be eventually kicked out.
" They will leave. It is the law," he said when he spoke to News24.
