Why Kenyans Should Shun Tribalism by Hook or Crook

15 June 2016, 17:02

Nairobi - It is time we let go our tribal goggles, and isolate the real enemy from the crowd.

Take a sober walk down the history lane, and you will realize that Luos, Kalenjins, Kikuyus, Kambas, the Mijikenda, the Indian minority, etc., once believed in a country called Kenya.

Pio Gama Pinto once clandestinely organized arms shipment to the Mau Mau deep in the forest.

The Britons often times jailed Makhan Singh, a Kenyan of Indian extraction, a longstanding labor unionist, and a die hard patriot, for standing for the rights of African workers.

Ochieng Oneko was a KAU Member, and so was Harry Thuku.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga was a lifetime KAU member, and so was Mzee Kenyatta (until he betrayed Mau Mau Spirit by going to bed with the Britons in exchange of wealth and personal favors).

When KADU was busy striking a secret deal with the Britons and their proxies, Jaramogi, through KANU, was busy glob-trotting lobbying for Kenyatta na Uhuru.

It was he, a Luo, and not the likes of James Gichuru (a Kikuyu) who earnestly fought for the release of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta from Kpenguria alongside the other detainees.

Moi, Ngala, Shikuku, Tom Mboya, James Gichuru...were once die hard proponents of federalism, and so was the settler minority led by the likes of Blundel, Gregon, and Lord Delamere.

They were never patriots. They were never true to the spirit of Kenyanhood. Yet we all know that the skewed history has rewarded their lot by branding them heroes and martyrs.

Mzee Kenyatta's government was blamed for assassinations of not only Luos such as Tom Mboya, but also Kikuyus such as Josiah Mwangi Kariuki.

Kenyatta’s close associates were never the actual sons and daughters (or even remnants) of Mau Mau. No! They were sons and daughters of former collaborators e.g. the Nyachaes, the Koinanges, etc.

Then came Mwai Kibaki who despite being elected by almost every tribe, went on to disproportionately distribute the national cake towards his own. Ordinary Kikuyus did not benefit from the Anglo Leasing Scandals. No! It was a few bourgeoisie then holding the yam and the knife.

Today, the Kenyatta's are dishing out huge chunks of their ill-gotten parcels of land to the Taita's and not the Kikuyus of Murang'a, Kiambu, Nyeri or even their Meru cousins. Why? It is not about tribe, but personal interests.

Yet Kikuyus continue buying the intentionally contorted narrative that the UhuRuto dynasty is meant to benefit them.

Those now benefiting from the runaway state-sanctioned looting are not ordinary Kalenjins or Kikuyus.

Not even the Maasai whose leaders continue betraying their people for not fighting for their appropriated lands (to date, the Kenyan government, despite half-hearted amendments here and there, is yet to repeal the imperial clauses in the constitution that gazetted huge chunks of the Maasai lands in favor of white settlers).

The true beneficiaries of the perpetual thieving in JUBILEE are TNA/URP shameless mongrels masquerading as our grassroots leaders.

The Kikuyu-Kalenjin ruling dynasty has since served its key objectives: those of safeguarding their precious necks from the wrath of the ICC, and maintaining the Status Quo.

In so doing, the Mois, the Kenyattas, the Nyachaes, the Koinanges, the Kibakis, etc., will continue swimming in plenty as the ordinary Kenyans (Kalenjins and Kikuyus included) struggle to make ends meet.

The high and mighty (both in government and in opposition) will continue wining and dining in Hilton whence the ordinary Kenyans tore each other apart. In the end, whatever political divide carries the day, the inevitable loser will be you and me unless we say enough is enough with divisive, tribal-oriented, and shortsighted politics.
