Why are Kenyan men not going to church?
11 July 2016, 20:32
Last Sunday I was in church and wondered for the umpteen time why the pews are overwhelmingly filled by women. Where could the men be? i mused. This has been a concern for many a pastor. They not with concern that men activities like the men fellowship attracts so few people in attendance that they have been scrapped off altogether in some churches. In others they are done ones in a long while just for the sake of having them. Many ladies now feel it should be acceptable to date a non-believer because the math of getting a man in church does not add up.
D Murrow attempts to get to the heart of the problem in his book; “Why men Hate going to church” and he proffers some light of the problem.
Church Feels like a Place of Women.
Men love freedom and space yet the siting in church is close to each other unlike the bar where they have more space. The song talk of falling in love with another man, the services include a lot of crying, the announcements are mostly about activities for women and children and women are serving and leading most of the public roles.
We teach to The Women
If the flock is mostly women, the pastor will be teaching to women and giving examples that are relevant only to women. There is proven wisdom that “When you preach to men the women listen .preach to the women and men will leave.” Preaching the masculine aspects of Jesus words about sacrifice, mission, hardship, commitment and reward helps to tag the men along.
Men don’t feel needed.
85% of Christian men are not spiritually challenged. The church leadership needs to help men understand who they are in Christ and accept God’s high calling. We need to call men to the great mission of delivering God’s justice, standing against evil and sacrificing for the greater good – just like the men in the Bible and heroes in history.
Men Don’t follow omen
75% of sons brought to church by mom drop out and the opposite is true when dad brings them. Men want to follow men .We need to respect that need and not accuse them of hating women. They are wired to protect and lead the family and want to learn how to do that from fellow men.
Men Follow Men
Men may follow women leadership out of courtesy and respect but what really motivates them are strong manly leaders. Bold leaders who are not dictators attract men. Pastors need to be humble and encouraging and be a man’s man. Most men pastors feel more attracted to the women not sexually but because women are more pliant and easy followers .They focus attention on women and wonder where the men are.
