Who You Are Online: The 10 Online Personalities
13 October 2016, 10:54
The best you can do on social media is to hide your identity, never your personality. That leaks through every action you take online, including the decision to reveal or hide altogether the details of your identity. Say as little as you wish, you still say something about yourself.
A survey by the UK- based online bank First Direct has determined over 10 personality types. People do not fit neatly into one particular identity, but rather display characteristics that fill out into a number of them.
1. The Ultras
The most extreme of these identities, ultras exist for social media. They live on it day and night; updating, chatting, reacting, following… They will multi task social media in their day to day activities where they can.
Their distinctive mark is that they are unapologetic and quite open about their addiction.
These are almost as involved in social media as the ultras, except that they are in denial of the control it has over their life. If however they find themselves unable to access social media, they feel as anxious as a man locked out of his house.
This would describe most of us. In fact it is estimated that 45% of Facebook users fall in this category. These people are observers but not participants, followers, not instigators.
4. The Dippers
These use social media tentatively. They may be intimidated or ignorant of the technology, or even disillusioned by it. They hang on just because it seems the thing to do, but not because it is particularly useful.
These have not used social media before and are therefore yet to form impressions and manifest personalities. Their usage at the moment is low but may improve or deteriorate depending on their experience.
Peacocks strut and display the colorful feathers of their large following and the amount of reaction they garner on their posts and updates. Social media for them is a ground for popularity contests. They make outrageous posts and use ingenious methods to rake in those likes and comments.
They are meek get alongs offline, but are very loud and emphatic in their opinions online. Let loose on social media they will never let an argument slide without butting in their two pence worth. A number of them are to be found entertaining people on reddit.
These are people dissatisfied with their life and so build an entirely new one online. They take their photos in flattering angles and superimpose themselves on locations they have never visited. They try to make out that their life is way more exciting than it actually is. You meet them in person and they are totally different from what you know.
The ghosts haunt social media under the guise of fake accounts. They may do this to avoid giving information about themselves to strangers or to perpetrate interests and pursuits that are not entirely socially acceptable, like stalking those who have already blocked them.
10. The Informers
They are the first to know, and are immensely pleased and proud to be the first to inform you. They follow all the news media, and are forever on the prowl for trending news before it breaks. They will cross the Sahara just to be the first to tell you your wife is playing you with the pastor.
