What you need to know about Mama Lucy Kibaki

26 April 2016, 13:02 Samuel arap Yego

Nairobi - Lucy Kibaki was born in 1940 at Mukurwe-ini, Nyeri County.

She later went to Alliance High School, and later trained as a teacher, a role she held until she met her husband the former Head of State in 1960.

The two tied the knot in 1962 and were blessed with four children; Judy Wanjiku, Jimmy Kibaki, David Kagai and Tony Githinj.

Last seen publicly at an official function on August 27, 2010 during the promulgation of the Constitution at Uhuru Park, there were speculations over her well-being and health after reports emerged that she was seriously ill.

The former First Lady passed away Tuesday morning at Bupa Cromwel Hospital in London after ailing for over a month.

She will be remembered for being overprotective of her family.

In March 2009 for instance, she compelled her husband President Kibaki to convene a rare press conference where the head of state declared that he only had one wife (her) and four children. This was after reports had emerged of a secret second wife.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was the first leader to break the sad news. He eulogized the deceased as a committed leader  who was concerned with the wellbeing of the ordinary Kenyans.

"She  will be remembered for her immense contribution in the development of our country, in particular her focus on tackling HIV/AIDs, which will remain an inspiration to many," said Kenyatta

"On behalf of all Kenyans and my Government, I convey heartfelt condolences and encouragement to His Excellency Hon. Mwai Kibaki, family and friends."
