Nyahururu - Property worth millions of shillings was Saturday night destroyed after a fierce fire broke out at Laikipia University main campus in Nyahururu.
The fire destroyed the main University's Ngare Naro hostel which houses over 80 students.
According to the police, the fire is believed to have been caused by an electric fault.
Nyandarua North OCPD, Morris Asilla said that the fire started at around 8 pm.
“The incident was reported to us by the chief security officer, Mr Daniel Kaguna and we immediately rushed to the scene. However, it was so fierce that we could not manage to put it off,” he said.

He noted that nothing was salvaged as there was no fire engine available.
The incident came as the University was preparing to reopen on Monday after two months of closure following students unrest in November.
It however has not been confirmed whether the incident is connected to a looming students suspension due this week in connection to the chaos.
“Initial investigations indicate that the fire was started by an electric fault and we cannot per now blame the students. We are however continuing with our investigations,” said the OCPD.
University vice chancellor Francis Lelo could not be reached for comments by the time of going to the press.
Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu told News24 that the County government has procured a KES 33 million fire fighter due to be delivered by the end of this month to help curb such incidents.
