University workers down their tools over allowances

Nyeri - About 400 workers of Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri have downed their tools demanding for increased allowances.
According to Kimathi University Staff Union (KUSU) chairman, Eric Murage, the staffers would only resume work if the institution management heeds to their demands of harmonizing their allowances with those of workers in other universities.
Murage said their colleagues in other universities earn a minimum of KES 16,000 commuter allowance compared to the KES 4,340 they are being paid at the university.

KUSU Secretary, Zakayo Kamangu said the institution management was aware that most workers commute from far and could use the allowance for transport.
“The management should not downplay this issue because most of the workers at the university travel long distances to work,” said Kamangu.
Efforts to seek comments from the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Ndirangu Kioni over the matter were futile as he declined to speak to the press.
