Nairobi - A Kenyatta University student has committed suicide after losing KES 80,000 on betting during the ongoing Euro 2016 competition.
The name of the student was not released due to the family's request.
The male student was found hanging dead behind his mother’s house in Migori County Wednesday.
Police say that he left a note explaining his actions.
left behind a note indicating that the money he was given to pay
college fees had disappeared in betting and he saw no need of living," Migori police boss David Kirui told News24 on phone.
The student had placed the money on UEFA Euro 2016 quarterfinal between Germany and Italy.
The betting craze in Kenya has been mentioned as one of the biggest threats to the country's social outlook, with a March 2016 report stating that it had increased the number of suicides, domestic quarrels, marriage break-ups and financial degradation in the country.
