Nairobi - The University of Nairobi administration has assured the public that the premier learning institution that was closed after students went on rampage will be re-opened soon.
Vice Chancellor (VC) Peter Mbithi Friday told journalists that the management of the university is working tirelessly to sort out issues before they recall students back.
“The University Management is working around the clock to expeditiously put certain conditions right before we seek the senate approval to re-open the University as soon as practicable,” said Mbithi.
Prof Mbithi said the 201 students who were suspended this week after they destroyed property as they took to the streets to protest botched elections shall start appearing before disciplinary committees as from April 19, 2016.
“The students at the various disciplinary committees are expected to the charges leveled against them. The students shall be accorded a fair hearing. We are encouraging them to come along with their parents and guardians,” he said.
The VC at the same time explained that a Senate Committee appointed to audit the affairs of SONU and review its electoral process has completed its work and shall table it before the Senate for consideration next week.
“The Committee which is also working on the improvement of security and safety at halls of residence has completed its work and shall table its final report before the senate for consideration next week.
“We are also working closely with the government on strategies to improve security and safety at the University in short term and on the long term,” he said.
