Uhuru Western Kenya trip unsatisfactory, locals say

16 November 2015, 16:22 William Korir

Nairobi - President Uhuru Kenyatta made the trip to Western Kenya to re-assure Kenyans that he is in power and doing well. Locals though, feel otherwise.

The President was in western Kenya and Nyanza over the weekend, where he traversed the biggest Counties in the region and opened several new projects.

He also spoke about his agenda for the nation and what he was doing to ensure that the issues facing the country are dealt with.

Kenyans though were not satisfied.

Locals that News24 spoke to in Bungoma, Kakamega and Kisumu felt that there was too much being swept under the carpet.

The issue of corruption was top of the list.

" The President did not speak about corruption and instead took on other issues he could have avoided, such as opposition leaders and the sugar issue in Somalia which in my view was a ploy to switch focus from real issues," Festus Adagala a teacher in Kakamega said of the visit.

In Bungoma, it was more of the same.

" The President should have focused on telling us how corruption will be dealt with and if any, the measures to stem the very bad economic tide the country is facing," Brian Wanangwe, a student in Bungoma added.

Uhuru was equivocal that the country is on the right path but a recent opinion poll shows otherwise.

More and more Kenyans do feel that the country is lacking leadership and headed in the wrong direction, which has been brushed aside by the President.

" Kenyans believe in us and want to see us succeed. That is what we are focussing on," he said in Kisumu.

The three day tour will end today in the north Rift.
