Two armed suspected robbers shot dead in Nyeri

04 May 2016, 18:02 Joseph Njung’eh

Nyeri - Police in Nyeri have shot dead two armed suspected robbers while trying to rob a macadamia nuts company staff along Nyeri-Karatina road.

One suspect however escaped with bullet wounds during the broad daylight robbery at Mahiga-ini Springs area.

A police officer and the Macadamia company staff were seriously injured in the melee and are admitted at a Karatina hospital.

The three robbers, while using a Probox car, had trailed the staff who was riding on a motorcycle from Karatina town.

At around 12 noon they stopped him at the bumps and shot him on the stomach once before trying to search money in his jacket and pockets.

It was at that point that police officers who were on patrol along the road reached the scene and demanded to know what was happening.

Instead, the said thugs replied with gunshots injuring one officer on the leg.

Mathira West OCPD David Kemboi said the officers immediately retaliated killing the two on the spot as the other escaped.

Police recovered an AK47 rifle, motorcycle and several rounds of ammunition.

Personal documents were also recovered at the scene.

Kemboi said the gang has been terrorising residents and businessmen of Mwea, Kirinyaga and Nyeri towns.

He noted that police have been pursuing them for the last one week since they have been on the wanted list.

He said the bodies were taken to Karatina hospital mortuary as he exuded confidence that the escapee alleged thug will be apprehended.
