Trucks, other vehicles swept away as rains pound Nyeri

19 January 2016, 18:35 Joseph Njung'eh

Nyeri - Heavy rains which pounded in Nyeri County on Monday night wrecked havoc and also left a trail of destruction.

The rains which pounded for over six hours burst the banks of Mwiyogo and Honi rivers in Kieni West sub-County and swept away vehicles, flooding Kanyagia township and also causing heavy traffic jam.

One truck which was ferrying potatoes from Nyahururu to Mukurwe-ini was swept at Honi River near Mweiga town.

The driver of the truck was rushed to a local hospital where he was admitted.

Several others were injured in the incident.

Few kilometers away, Kanyagia Township was flooded for the second time this year and destroyed goods worth thousands of shillings.

Business premises and homes were also destroyed.

Another major destruction was reported at Mwiyogo River which burst its banks and swept away vehicles including two trucks which were ferrying goods.

A driver of the lorry, George Muchiri who was ferrying cabbages, counted losses of over KES 150 000 after the truck ferrying the cabbages from Ndaragwa to Nyeri town was swept away.

Another loaded lorry was still stuck in the mud despite efforts to remove it.

The rains caused a heavy snarl-up which lasted for over six hours with motorists spending the night inside their vehicles.

The rains started around 6pm until past midnight.

A motorist, Reuben Kariuki said some dams could have burst at the upper side of Kieni near Aberdare ranges.

The locals are now urging both governments to ensure there is proper drainage along the highway to avoid further damage.
