Nyeri - Three children aged between one and five have burnt to death after their house caught fire at Mathari village, Nyeri town sub-county.
According to an eyewitness, Richard Maina, efforts to put off the fire were futile as it was spreading fast.
Maina said he was working at a nearby construction site when he saw huge smoke coming out of the house.
When they rushed to the scene, they could not access the house as it was locked from outside.

He said the children, who were staying with their grandmother, were alone when the incident happened.
"The grandmother had left, locking the house from outside," he narrated.
However, the residents blamed firefighters for delayed rescue, saying they arrived after the whole house was reduced to ashes.
The cause of fire was not immediately established but investigations into the matter have started.
The charred bodies of the children were taken to Nyeri County Referral Hospital mortuary. For the latest on national news, politics, sport, entertainment and more follow us on Twitter and like our Facebook page!
