Tension as woman sets herself, children on fire

Embu - A 35-year-old woman set herself and her two children on fire in their house in Majimbo estate, Embu town in what residents believe to have been caused by a family dispute.
Villagers could not hide their shock as police removed the bodies of Caroline Wanjiru, who is a businesswoman and a wife to a banker and those of her two children aged two and half and nine years, respectively.
They were all burnt beyond recognition in the 11.am incident.

Embu West OCPD, Francis Sang’ said neighbours saw clouds of smoke coming from the house, where they tried to gain access to no avail, as the gate and doors had been locked from the inside.
He said the cause of the fire was not known and urged public to stop speculating since investigations were ongoing.
Collins Muchiri, a neighbour, said he had visited his farm, near the house, when he heard screams and huge cloud of smoke coming from the house.
He said he tried to call the wife’s husband, who is said to be a bank manager in Siakago town but could not reach him.
Daisy Njagi, a neighbour termed Wanjiru as a jovial woman, who showed no signs of distress.
She said the woman used to take her two children to school, and was friendly.
They all wondered what could have gotten into the mind of the woman to end her life and that of her children in such a tragic and painful manner.
The bodies of the three were removed to the Embu level Five Hospital mortuary.
