Teachers to get September salaries, Government says
29 November 2015, 17:04
Nairobi - The government has announced that teachers will be paid their September salaries after talks with the Teachers Service Commision TSC.
Teachers had yet to get their dues after the TSC refused to pay in the aftermath of the September teachers strike which went on for 5 weeks.
TSC had said it had no obligation to pay striking teachers, citing sabotage from the teachers who refused to go to class.
However, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i said Sunday that in the spirit of goodwill, teachers would get their dues.
" The President had asked that teachers be paid and after consultations with the TSC as well as Treasury and the Attorney general, we have agreed that teachers be paid," he said Sunday.
The announcement will be a relief for teachers who had feared the worst after the loss of their initial 50/60% pay-rise following a Court of Appeal ruling.
