Tanzanians accuse Odinga of 'grabbing' Olduvai Gorge
03 March 2016, 15:10
Nairobi - The eldest daughter of Cord leader Raila Odinga has issued an apology to Tanzanians after she stated at a past event that the Olduvai Gorge archaeological site is located in Kenya.
Rosemary Odinga, while addressing over 1 000 young people at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City on August 18, 2015 made the remarks which irked citizens of the neighbouring state.
Marianne Mwiki, a Tanzanian on Tuesday launched an online petition to compel Rosemary to submit a public apology for issuing the misleading information at the high profile international forum.
Mwiki in her petition clarified that Olduvai Gorge is not in Kenya, pointing out that it is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world located in Tanzania.
"I have just been reminded of an incident which occurred while attending the International Young Leaders Assembly (IYLA) conference, seven months ago. There was a Freudian slip," admitted Rosemary on her official Facebook page on Tuesday night.

"Apparently, our brothers and sisters from Tanzania are alarmed that I have grabbed their Olduvai Gorge. In Kenya, we equally have a beautiful prehistoric site named Olorgesailie along the way to Magadi. Sorry to my Tanzanian brothers and sisters, your Olduvai Gorge is safe," she posted, saving what was seemingly going to be a diplomatic tiff between the two nations.
The online petition against the 'misleading' remarks made by the daughter of the ODM party leader had generated a lot of heat on the internet, with the initiator of the petition asking for a million signatures to compel Rosemary to apologize.
By noon yesterday, 2 081 supporters had signed the petition, with most of them sharply criticizing Rosemary and Kenyans in general for 'grabbing' and illegally associating with what belongs to Tanzania.
"We should also make my brothers and sisters in Kenya to stop using Mt Kilimanjaro as a tourism destination for their country while they know well that it is in Tanzania and will remain so. Mt Kilimanjaro and Olduvai Gorge are both in Tanzania. Period," said Mhagama Mike.
"We have known Kenyans for their deliberate efforts to claim what is not rightfully theirs. They started with Mount Kilimanjaro and they have now moved to Olduvai Gorge. Appalling," posted Dennis Mwendwa.
"It's absurd what the Kenyans are doing, recently they have posted that the infamous Tanzanian musicians Diamond platinum is a Kenyan. In near future we will hear Magufuli originate from Kenya. I really pity them," noted Gerald Mbengwa.
