Shock as family wakes up to an empty coffin at the gate

17 December 2015, 12:34 Ben Wafula

Bungoma - Residents of Sitabicha village in the outskirts of Webuye town were stunned when they woke up to find an empty coffin placed in the compound of one of them Wednesday morning.

The empty coffin that was dumped in the compound by unknown people at night is being considered as a sign of a warning.

The coffin a child had placed at the doorstep of Mr Augustin Munialo who lives in Nairobi with his family where he works.

According to a caretaker, Moses Soita who narrated the bizarre ordeal, said that he found the freshly furnished coffin at 7am near the gate as he left to get breakfast from the nearest shop.

"As I was opening the gate to buy milk for breakfast, I noticed a well vanished coffin that could accommodate a five-year-old corpse at the gate, something that shocked me because I have never witnessed such an incident in my life. I then informed my neighbors who trooped the compound to see for themselves," said Soita.

Soita added that he informed his employer as shocked neighbors watched in disbelief and called the police and area assistant Chief, Pius Wanyonyi who also did not believe even as he confirmed the incident to the members of the press.

Wanyonyi said such a shocking incident has never happened in his area of jurisdiction and called for calm as the police investigate to unravel the puzzle.

He requested any person with information to liaise with his office and the police in order to arrest the culprits behind the ugly act.

Demands by the crowd for the coffin to be opened was shattered as police carried it away to Webuye police station where it was opened before the presence of the media and a few members of the community but to the shock of many, it was very clean and totally empty.

According to a neighbor, this is not the first bizarre incident to be reported at Mr Munialo's home as a few weeks ago blood was found scattered around his compound, something that was associated with family differences.
