Nyeri - Shock gripped residents of Muruguru location, Nyeri, following reports that a young girl committed suicide by jumping over 100 feet down a waterfall.
The 15-year-old girl whose identity was not established immediately took the plunge of death at the Sagana falls Monday midday despite frantic attempts by some two villagers to rescue her.
A young man, Crispus Mugambi, narrated how he almost fell over as he tried to rescue the girl who was by then standing precariously on the cliff.
Mugambi said he first met the girl sitting on a rock as he was going to fetch water where the girl identified herself to him as ‘ciku’ upon probing.
He said it was during his second trip that he found the short plump girl standing at the edge of the cliff and crawled towards her as he tried to dissuade her from jumping.
The young man continued that the girl could hear none of that, saying she was ‘tired of life’ and it was then that he grabbed her by the shoulders as he called for help form another villager fishing nearby.
He said the girl slipped as they were trying to pull her out and went down screaming as she rolled down hitting on the rocky cliff sides.
Mugambi continued that the girl left her phone behind though she had deleted all the messages and call log.
He however said in her phone memory card, were recorded conversations with her boyfriend and mother.
To her boyfriend, Mugambi said, the girl had bid him farewell telling him, “Goodbye, you will never see me again,” after he called asking about her whereabouts.
Another villager, Ruth Njeri, said another conversation was with her mother where she was requesting her to bring her the school blouse at undefined place.
She said the mother replied she was not at home and asked her to go collect herself, but she declined, saying she was not ready to go and face her father.
It took the efforts of a rescue team from the Kenya Red Cross Society to retrieve the body, which was by then floating whereby they used ropes to pull out and over the cliff.
Nyeri OCPD, Makau Masai, said that it was the second death after a while ago, a young man perished as he slipped while posing for a photo by a friend.
Nyeri Central Deputy County Commissioner, John Marete, said they would engage the county government in order to ensure the area is fenced to avert further loss of life.
He added that with proper planning, the site could be used as a tourist attraction.
