Nyeri - Four family members died Sunday in a road accident along Makutano-Ngurubani road in Kirinyaga County.
The accident occurred when the vehicle hit Jackson Mbutu, 60, who was being pushed across the road on a wheelchair by his three grandchildren.
The incident sparked protests as angry residents attacked the driver and torched the vehicle.
The driver was rescued by officers from Wamumu police post.
Police said the grandchildren aged 7, 10 and 13 died on the spot, while Mbutu died while being taken to Kerugoya Level 4 Hospital.

The four were on their way home from Piai Market.
“The children usually picked up their disabled grandfather every evening from the market where he worked as a cobbler,” said Njagi Mungai, an eyewitness.
Njagi explained that the driver lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road, knocking down the four.
“After the accident, the driver attempted to escape but residents blocked the way, dragged him out of the vehicle and thrashed him thoroughly,” he said.
The four bodies were taken to Karira mortuary as investigations into the incident kicked off.
Some of the relatives who arrived at the scene collapsed and were taken to Mwea Mission Hospital.
