Rapper Wangechi publically calls out Tecno Mobile for using her Image without consent or payment

01 September 2016, 22:48 Eugene Odang

Nairobi - Kenyan female rapper Wangechi is up in arms over the unauthorized use of her image by Tecno Mobile in the promotion of one of their latest flagship brands.

She took to social media to complain about them using her image on some promotional material without her permission or payment, something artists take very seriously.

In response to this, the mobile phone manufacturer apparently deleted all the material that the rapper was in and went completely silent.

She follows in the same footsteps as Elani who earlier in the year went up in arms complaining about poor pay by the Music Copyright Society of Kenya. This is becoming a worrying trend which leaves the artists who have put in all the work wanting financially.

Her post on Facebook read “I’m not one to raise my voice online but it reaches a moment where you have to fight for your hard work and what you believe in. In early June Tecno Kenya ran an ad campaign around a new phone and used my image for that campaign. They used my image and likeness in the form of an advertisement which came across as an endorsement of the product.”

She goes on to write “They did not seek my approval or consent for it neither did they pay for the use of my image and likeness. After 8 weeks of legal conversation they went silent and deleted all images and videos associated with me. As an artist our image and likeness is our source of livelihood it is our bread and butter. It is not okay to misuse and take away from us when we work so hard to build ourselves.”

Fellow artist DNG also joined in after reading Wangechi’s post, expressing his shock and disappointment at the fact that corporates in 2016 still had the nerve to use people’s images without proper compensation. He wrote “Yo...Wait a minute. We are in 2016 right? In this day and age, we still have Corporate Brands with the nerve to use someone's image behind their back & not pay them? I wish it was me, I'd retire overnight! Seriously, who is in charge of Tecno Mobile??? The people I knew left ages ago!!! Who is the current Brand Manager / Marketing Manager??? Worse off, which agency is this that's outchea clowning??? People slept on the job here. This is not only ethical and unprofessional but shady & sloppy. NAME & SHAME THESE CLOWNS!!!”
