Raila: Okoa Kenya will be supported by more than 30 County Assemblies

10 November 2015, 13:38 Dennis Omido

Nairobi - Former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga says he is confident the Okoa Kenya referendum push will get overwhelming support from all the 47 County Assemblies across the country.

Speaking in an interview on a local TV station on Monday, the Cord leader said they were optimistic that more than 30 County Assemblies will approve the referendum bill.

“We are more than confident that we will get the numbers required by the constitution. We think we will get more than 30,” Raila said.

He urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to be transparent in the verification of the signatures, even if the bill pushes for major changes in the commission.

“We hope that IEBC is going to be transparent in verification of signatures even if we are pushing for major changes in the commission in our push for referendum.

“The good thing is that we have also kept a copy of what we submitted to the commission and we even have a soft copy which we will also submit to them. If they show that they are completely biased, then that will give more reason as to why they should be shown the door,” Odinga said.

CORD is pushing for a referendum that seeks to make changes to the IEBC, increase of funds given to County governments among other issues.

After the verification of the signatures by IEBC, the bill will have to be approved by at least 24 County Assemblies, National Assembly and the Senate before being submitted to a vote by Kenyans.
