Mt.Elgon - Girl child education in Mt. Elgon is under threat for the last two years after predators and pedophiles have encroached and promote the young ones into parenthood.
Last week, 20 school girls between the ages of 14 and 18 from Chelebei Secondary School were confirmed to be pregnant, an information that once again hit the residents like a bullet.
In a pregnancy test done in the school, the Deputy Principal David Emachar said 20 students were victims of early pregnancy.

Following the incidences, professionals in the area are calling upon residents and the government to team up and help address the vice that has since get rooted in the area.
The Elgon Young Professionals (EYP) registered disappointment in the way the mountain is being exposed in bad things and called on teamwork to help tame the behaviour.
“We will have a meeting with the student, teachers and parents to look critically into the state of affairs in that school and visit other several schools in the constituency,” said Diphus Ngeny, EYP Chairman.
The recently registered non-profit organization is calling upon the government and law enforcers in the area to immediately prosecute all those involved in the incident and serve as a lesson to others.
“We encourage our lawyers to help us with support from the government to prosecute these predators with moral decay,” urged Ngeny.
The groups Secretary said sexuality discussions between parents and their children are almost non-existent among many parents in the area which expose children to danger of being targeted without self awareness.
Children’s being targeted in the area is not a new thing. Last year, 18 children of Chepkurkur Primar school in Kopsiro were found pregnant, an incident that annoyed Deputy President William Ruto who ordered Chiefs to act quickly to arrest the culprits.
The DP led a fundraising to raise money for the construction of Girl Rehabilitation center gannering the support of Bungoma County MP Reginalda Wanyonyi but to date, the centre is yet to be established.
The Professionals in the area says they will do a series of sexual education and volunteer to conduct motivational talks in the schools across Mt. Elgon and continue their support to a girl child.
“Poverty in the area, outdated culture such as female genital mutilation, lack of pare-child sexual address is some of the things to blame for the rise of early pregnancy in the schools,” said Emachar.
