Pregnant woman, her boyfriend arrested with illegal gun in a matatu

11 August 2016, 16:00 Joseph Njung’eh

Nyeri - Nyeri police have arrested a pregnant woman together with her boyfriend in possession of an illegal Ceska Pistol loaded with five bullets.

The area OCPD Masai Makau said the couple was inside a 14-seater matatu at Nyeri upper stage heading to Nanyuki.

“We got information from members of the public that two people were in town and were behaving suspiciously. Our plain clothed police officers tracked them up to the matatu where they were arrested and the firearm recovered loaded with five rounds of ammunition,” Makau reported.

He said the suspects identified as Alex Mathenge and Venessa Wambui alias Tisho could be members of a gun-wielding gang operating in Nyeri and the neighbouring towns.

“The woman appears to be pregnant and she also said so but is subject to investigations. She could be using the pregnancy to conceal her criminality,” noted the police boss.

He said the woman was at the back seat of the vehicle sitting on a hand-bag that had the gun.

“Police officers took charge of the matatu and called for reinforcement immediately. The suspects had intentions of hijacking it along the way,” Makau added.

While appreciating police efforts, the terrified passengers said the man kept moving in and out of the matatu ostensibly to keep watch.

“We would have gotten it rough along the way, thanks to police. The woman said she was pregnant but in her hand-bag she had sanitary towels and I wondered what was the use of the towels to an expectant woman? Maybe she is not pregnant,” said one Martin Zangi.

However, a secondary schoolboy who was sitting next to the suspects said the woman had two guns in the bag.

After frisking other passengers, luggage and the vehicle police found no other weapon
