Bungoma - Police in Bungoma County are pursuing a fake Nyumba Kumi official who led a mob in attacking and setting ablaze a 60-year-old man for defending his son and worker who allegedly robbed a local businessman.
County Commissioner Mohamed Maalim has ordered for the immediate arrest of Patrick Timbiti who is alleged to have led a group of over 100 armed youths to invade the home of the late George Otieno in Musikoma Bakery village, Kanduyi constituency, and hacked him to death.
Speaking in his office, Maalim said that two sons purported to belong to the late Oloo accosted a businessman who is nephew to the deceased, Maxwell Timbiti as he was heading home after work.
“Intelligence reports indicate that the suspect led a number of youths to attack the deceased after his nephew was accosted and hacked Oloo’s sons. We are following the leads and will arrest all of them,” he said.
However, the family members led by the son of the deceased, Walter Otieno, says that the mob that was baying for blood of one of their workers for allegedly stealing a bed and mattress from their neighbor, arrested the suspect who was found with the stolen property but when they missed him, they descended on his father.

“The story by the state is contrary to what we know. One of our workers who helps us with brick making was alleged to have stolen bedding from a neighbor and therefore they arrested the suspect who was found with the mattress to help them find the real thief but when they missed him, they attacked our home,” he said.
The mob, after failing to get the thief and armed with petrol, torched three houses belonging to the late man and his son.
“When my father moved out to get clues on what led to the unfortunate incident, he was ambushed by the angry and armed youths who hacked him with sharp pangas, wrapped his body in a polythene bag and doused it in petrol. He was burnt beyond recognition but died hours later while receiving medication at the Bungoma Referral hospital,” he said.
Otieno said the suspects who are still in large after committing the heinous act are still threatening the family with dire consequences if they report them to police.
“We are living in fear owing to the fact that the suspects have threatened to evict members of the other tribe living within the area. We have been living peacefully but some Nyumba Kumi officials are threatening us and we fearing for our lives,” said Otieno.
The family is now demanding to be accorded enough security so they can accord their late father a decent burial. His body is being preserved at Bungoma County Referral Hospital.
The County Commissioner has denied any knowledge of the fake official and asked locals to avoid mob psychology which led to the death of the old man.
Bungoma County has 2 950 Nyumba Kumi officials who report their insecurity issues to the police officers and provincial administrators.
