Isiolo - Police in Isiolo have impounded 500 bags of contraband sugar valued over KES 2 million at Merti sub-County.
The commodity that was packaged in 50 kilogram sacks was being intercepted in a lorry at Bassa area, about 200 kilometres from Isiolo town.
Isiolo County Commissioner, George Natembeya confirmed the incident adding that the lorry driver and loaders were also arrested.
He said the sugar is suspected to have originated from Dubai and was on transit to Nairobi.

“The location Chief confronted the sugar smugglers following a tip from the public that the suspects were driving through a bush to avoid arrest along the Isiolo-Merti road,” he added.
Natembeya said that illegal importation of commodities denied the country of revenue and also negatively affected genuine businesses.
He urged police to be vigilant at the roadblocks and warned unscrupulous importers of severe measures once arrested.
He said the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials would inspect the contraband sugar before pressing charges against the suspects.
