Papa Wemba reaches out from the grave
28 June 2016, 19:43
Nairobi - A few weeks back, the world was shaken by
the sudden and very public demise of Congolese Rhumba, Soukous and Ndombolo
legend Papa Wemba (Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba).
He passed away at the
age of 66 in April this year after collapsing while performing live on stage
for fans at the 2016 FEMUA.
His death however doesn’t mean the end of his music
though, with a new track that was recorded before his demise being released by
featured artist Diamond.
The song titled Chacun Pour Soi (Every Man
for Himself) was in production when he passed on, prompting the producers and
Diamond to release it in his memory.
It combines styles from two distinct
places, with a predominantly Lingala feel to it, but with the subtle lyrical
and vocal abilities from the Tanzanian.
