Bungoma - Bungoma Senator, Moses Wetang’ula says that Migingo Island on Lake Victoria belongs to Kenya and thus there is no need for alarm.
Addressing the press in his Bungoma home, Wetang’ula insisted that the joint boundary survey they carried out with Ugandan top government officials showed that the tiny island at the centre of a dispute is owned by Kenya.
“During retired President Mwai Kibaki’s tenure, a task-force was formed to look at the issues surrounding Migingo Island. I was chairing the Kenyan delegation while Ugandan foreign affairs minister Sam Kuteesa was the leader of the Ugandan delegation. We signed a memorandum which was supposed to be signed by the head of states to fully recognize Migingo as a Kenyan island,” he said.
The CORD Co-Principal called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to stop initiating any process to look into the Migingo issue but instead sign the pact we reached with Uganda.

“As he meets the Uganda President Yoweri Museveni, let him tell his visitor that the process they are planning to embark on was completed a long time ago and what Kenyans are waiting is for it to be signed and brought into the public limelight,” said Wetang’ula.
The Ford Kenya party leader said that the survey carried out by the international surveyors showed Migingo was in Kenya and it should be respected as such.
He called on Uganda to respect the international boundaries of states and asked the neighbouring state to avoid frustrating Kenyans by using its security agents to harass those residing on the Island.
“I hope President Museveni is in the country to sign the memorandum we reached and not planning any to start another task-force to investigate the issue again because it will be a waste of time and resources,” he said.
He said that they used KES 184 million to carry on with the investigations and came up with a memorandum which he expects both countries to sign during the meeting to create a mutual working relationship.
