Mombasa - National disaster management unit (NDMU) has condemned the recent security drill at Strathmore University that caused death of one person and injured 20 others, and called for the planners and executors to take responsibility.
NDMU has accused the Strathmore University management for failing to conduct the government and security organs before conducting the drill.
Speaking to the press in Mombasa, NDMU communications officer Pius Mwachi said they were not informed about the drill.
“The drill was wrongly executed; we were not informed about the drill and we are asking why they had to source for a private drill yet the government offers free drills which are planned executed without creating injuries," said Mwachi.
He said NDMU has conducted successful drills in institutions which were successful and wondered why the institution procured services of a private entity.
Mwachi said NDMU is the only mandated body in the country allowed to conduct security drills and advice the national, County and private sectors on how to should conduct their drills.
“In this case, we were never even consulted before the drill was conducted. We even wrote to the institution informing them that the drill they conducted was wrong but they never replied to us,” said Mwachi.
He urged members of the public not to participate in any drill that is not verified by the NDMU but report such incidents to the police to avoid such fatalities. For the latest on national news, politics, sport, entertainment and more follow us on Twitter and like our Facebook page!
