Bungoma - Bumula Member of Parliament, Boniface Otsiula wants Central Organization of Trade Unions Secretary General, Francis Atwoli to name the barons behind the sugar smuggling trade.
He called on Cotu boss to not only forward the names of sugar barons to the State, but also release them to the public for accountability.
“Atwoli should release the names to the public because he speaks for the millions of employees. Let him make those names public and we will stand with him,” Otsiula said.
Speaking in Bungoma, the legislator urged Kenyans to stand with Atwoli so that he can be motivated to name the cartel behind sugar smuggling.

Over the weekend, the Cotu boss said he has a list of “principal suspects” who smuggle contraband sugar through the port of Mombasa and is ready to submit the names to the authorities.
“All sugar barons are well known to the government. It is hypocritical for any government agency to claim it is investigating those involved,” he said.
His revelation led to the recovery of KES 340 million worth of ethanol and contraband sugar at the port of Mombasa where he called for the apprehension of the barons.
“Smuggling of cheap sugar from Comesa producing countries is killing the local sugar producing firms and many farmers will eventually suffer because of the sugar saturation,” he said.
