Mixed reactions as IEBC commissioners quit office

04 August 2016, 12:51 Kiplangat Langat

Nairobi - The news that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioners have agreed quit office in exchange for a handsome package has elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans on social media.

The news saw Kenyans take to social media with some lauding the move while others opposed it.

Kakamega Senator Bonni Khalwale lauded the move saying it was historical.

"History is made as IEBC commissioners throw in the towel and bow out of office in exchange for a dignified exit paving way for IEBC reforms!" he tweeted.

The IEBC reforms committee co-chair, James Orengo also lauded the move saying that the commissioners will go down the history for putting the nation's interest first.

Meru Senator who also co-chaired the committee sessions thanked the commissioners saying that their move was patriotic.

"Thank you commissioners for putting Kenya first so that we can have a peaceful, free and fair election," said Murungi.

"Better to lose billions of money than to experience human bloodshed," tweeted a Kenyan identified as proper citizen.

Other Kenyans opposed the move saying that the commissioners had been accused falsely.

"IEBC has been a victim of a smear campaign orchestrated by known crybabies. The cost of sending them home is just too much," tweeted Ahmedkadir.

Another Kenyan tweeted, "The timing of #iebcexit has more than meets the eye. Commissioners who stayed put against #IEBCMustGo demos cannot just quit like that."
