MCA sued for neglecting ex-girlfriend's child

Nyeri - Nyeri County Assembly Majority Leader, Duncan Gituanja has been ordered to pay KES 7 500 every month for upkeep of his former girlfriend's child.
In a suit filed before Nyeri Senior Magistrate Joan Wabilyanga, 37-year-old Virginia Wambui Mbende is accusing Gituanja of child neglect.
She wants KES 52 000 monthly upkeep for a child she allegedly bore with the Kabaru Ward MCA.
Wambui moved to court on August 14, 2015 and sued Gituanja for refusing to take up his parental role.
She told court that their relationship began in 2013 after he became MCA but 27-year-old Gituanja left after she got pregnant despite promising to marry her.
Wambui, who works for a local insurance firm, said efforts to have Gitunja pay child maintenance for their daughter has been futile.

“Despite earning more than KES 500 000 and hefty sitting allowances, he has neglected his parental responsibility and refused to contribute to the welfare of the child,” she said, disclosing that she earns KES 17 000 per month.
However, Gituanja through Sichangi and Co. Advocates denied all the allegations, including the promise to marry Wambui, but acknowledged that he was the child’s biological father.
He added that he was contributing KES 5 000 for the child’s maintenance which he said is reasonable since the woman is in gainful employment.
He noted that the amount Wambui demanded was aimed at harassing and extorting money from him and not in the interests of the child.
The case was slated to proceed on February 29, 2016.
