MCA accused of conning trader KES 300K hides in chambers to escape arrest

26 July 2016, 13:59 Joseph Njung'eh

Nyeri - Police in Kirinyaga have taken up a case where a trader has recorded a statement accusing an MCA of conning him of KES 300,000.

The trader, who is a hardware merchant, said the MCA went for the money as inducement for an award of a contract.

However, the MCA remained holed up inside the County Assembly offices for more than two hours to avoid arrest after allegedly failing to refund the money.

A contingent of police officers swarmed the Assembly premises but on realizing their presence the MCA took cover.

The officers remained at the premises up to 6.30pm but retreated when the MCA failed to leave the premises.

He was later sneaked out of the buildings in a private vehicle accompanied by two other colleagues using an alternative gate which is rarely used.

The MCA was said to have taken the money from the trader as a 10 percent payment in a KES 3 million failed contract deal.

According to the trader, the contract was for the supply of water pipes but after taking the money, the MCA failed to honour the deal.

“This MCA came to my workplace in March this year where we struck the deal and I paid him the amount on condition that he would influence the award of the tender and bring to me a Local Purchase Order (LPO) to enable me supply the pipes.

“But the following day, he changed the story that those in the tender Committee were unavailable to issue the document,” the trader claimed.

The businessman said the MCA kept on shifting goal posts until sometime in May, this year when he shocked him by stating that he could not refund the cash as it had already been disbursed to other team members in the deal.
