Nyeri - A 21-year-old man at Mweiga area in Nyeri has killed his mother under unclear circumstances, barely a week after he torched her house.
The man who has been identified as Peter Kairu is said to have beaten up his 52-year-old mother before hitting him thrice on the head with a piece of wood, killing her instantly.
He is believed to have committed the offense over some money his mother had received from well-wishers to rebuild her destroyed house.
“The mother had gone to withdraw some money to buy wood to rebuild her house. We think he was after that money,” said Elizabeth King’ori, one of their neighbours.
King'ori had gone to look for the deceased as she was expecting guests to help her raise more funds, upon which she heard a scream coming from the compound.
“I saw the son running away as the mother collapsed,” she added.
According to neighbours, the assailant reduced his mother’s house into ashes five days ago but she covered it up.

They said that he just stood beside the burning house and watched as locals helplessly tried to put out the fire.
They added that this was not the first time he attacked his mother, as he had stabbed her in the hand a while back.
He is also said to have developed a habit of quarreling with his mother over her failure to raise fees for his college education.
Residents described him as a very reserved and quite person who spends most of his time indoors.
The deceased mother of three hails from Othaya and had recently relocated to Mweiga where she met death.
Confirming the incident, Kieni West OCPD John Kemboi said that a manhunt for the assailant had been launched.
“We are on his trail already and members of the public have joined in the search,” said Kemboi.
