Man faints inside collapsed latrine, buried by human waste

Nyeri - Shock has gripped residents of Kahigaini location in Tetu sub-county, Nyeri, after a man fell into a pit latrine and got trapped inside.
The 40-year-old man was among other five parents who were demolishing the latrine at Kahigaini Primary School after showing signs of sinking.
They were demolishing it as a safety measure to school children.

However, the man identified as Fredrick Githinji slipped inside as the latrine caved in burying him inside the human waste.
Neighbours and teachers in the school immediately called for help and looked for tools to dig him out of the rubble.
A Kenya Red Cross response team together with rescue unit of Nyeri County Government arrived at the scene with special tools and assisted in the exercise that took about four hours.
He was removed while unconscious and rushed to Mathari Mission Hospital where he was admitted with severe leg injuries.
Area Deputy County Commissioner, Herman Shambi thanked residents and rescue teams for their efforts as he called for immediate review of all public structures.
He attributed the incident to shoddy construction works saying that will not be tolerated together with all activities that put public lives at risk.
