Lobby group wants Mandera security chiefs sacked over mass graves

09 December 2015, 08:13 Ken Wekesa

Mombasa - Mombasa-based lobby group, Haki Afrika has called for the sacking of top security chiefs in Mandera County following the discovery of mass graves that were unearthed by herders in the area.

The lobby group executive director, Hussein Khalid said the discovery of the mass graves was a clear indication that human rights are currently being violated in the North Eastern region in the name of fighting terror.

In a press statement, Haki Afrika has called for an investigation into matter to bring to light what could have transpired.

“The incident raises a big alarm in Kenya. It's very unfortunate that people are being killed and there is no clue on what might have led to the deaths,” lamented Khalid.

He said the incident was major setback as Kenya was preparing to celebrate world human rights day on December 10.

Khalid also said he believed that the Tsavo west and east thicket might be holding other secret mass graves of people who have been reported missing at the coastal region.

Haki Afrika joins Council of Muslim Preachers of Kenya who have called upon President Uhuru Kenyatta to order the IG and Interior CS to arrest those suspected to have been involved in the killings.

Sheikh Mohammed Khalifa said some of the bodies recovered form the mass graves are believed to be of individuals who had been reported missing.
