LISTEN: Kenyan musical legend dies
18 July 2016, 15:00
Nairobi - Late last week, news broke of the death of a little known
but legendary Kenyan Funk musician based in Sweden called James Gicho.
Gicho was famously known for his track Smooth Operator as well as some recent
collaborative efforts with Funkstar De Luxe and other artists. His voice
brought life to many funk tunes, due to its husky nature, something almost
vital to today’s funk music.
The star, who passed only six days before his
birthday, suffering a stroke which may have been caused by complications to a
liver transplant he had gotten a few months before.
His brother mourned his passing on social media, revealing
that James had wanted to be an organ donor as well as to be cremated when he
passed on, something they were intending to respect.
He wrote “6 days to his
48th, James Gicho took his final bow early this morning. As the Lord's Prayer
states, "... Thy will be done...", and thou we, as man is wont to,
proposed otherwise, God disposed as He deemed fit!” He went on to say “Having
been an organ recipient, my brother had expressed a desire to be an organ donor
himself, which as a family we'll respect.
" He'd further stated he'd like to be
cremated, which we'll also respect. So 15 weeks and a day after Mum's demise,
Jimmy joins her. RIP St James!”
