Kuppet Executive Secretary aspirant dies a week before elections

12 February 2016, 09:48 Steve Njuguna

Nyahururu - A secondary school teacher who was running for the Nyandarua County Kuppet Executive secretary post died on Thursday morning, just a week before the elections.

Bernard Muiruri, a deputy Principal at Kurungu secondary school died at Nakuru War Memorial hospital after a short illness.

Muiruri was the only competitor challenging the incumbent Executive Secretary, Julius Macharia.

According to an aspirant vying for the Secretary post who was in his team, Kirubi Maina, Muiruri complained of a headache on Monday evening at his Lanet home and was rushed to the hospital.

He said the deceased was admitted the same day but he died Thursday while undergoing treatment.

"He was well and busy with his campaigns until Monday when he complained of a headache. It was after it persisted that he decided to go to hospital where he was admitted but yesterday he succumbed," he noted.

Kirubi noted that the union was still contemplating on whether to continue with the elections set for February 17 or have them postponed.

"We are still contemplating on what to do next since this is a big blow to the union. We shall advice our members accordingly," he noted.

He regretted that the nomination exercise had already been concluded and aspirants were now confused on how to front another candidate to face Macharia.
