Keep your dirty graft money, Bishop tells politicians

21 March 2016, 15:20 Joseph Njung'eh

Murang'a - The Murang’a Catholic Church Bishop, Maria Wainaina has told politicians to keep dirty money sourced from proceeds of corruption away from the church.

The Bishop who was speaking to over 4 000 Catholic Men Association (CMA) members of the Murang’a diocese at a mass held at Kiriaini Catholic Church, told politicians to stop taking offerings to church that have been sourced from corrupt dealings.

The Bishop who was reacting to recent reports that Murang’a County is the most corrupt warned that the level of corruption at the County is alarming.

Wainaina asked the Church to stamp its authority in fighting graft, saying such a fight must begin from within its ranks.

He urged the church leaders to be wary of the politicians they invite to conduct funds drives in their areas of jurisdiction.

“The church should not be used as a money laundering institute where dirty money is prayed for,” said an enraged Bishop Wainaina.

And true to his word, the Bishop went ahead to cancel a major funds drive that was scheduled for next Sunday at Kiangunyi Parish, in Murang’a County, where politicians had been invited to officiate.

Deputy Speaker for the Senate, Kembi Gitura who is also the Murang’a Senator, while translating the Bishop’s message which was delivered in the native Kikuyu language supported the Bishop’s move.

Kembi expressed disappointment in the manner in which law officers are handling corruption cases and suspects.

“There is a lot of laxity in prosecuting those involved,” said the Senator.
