Jubilee MP calls for expeditious re-constitution of IEBC

Nairobi - A new polls body should be formed expeditiously to give new commissioners adequate time to prepare for next elections, Nyeri Women Rep Priscilla Nyokabi has said.
Nyokabi said the 2017 general elections will be held in August since efforts to have them in December failed twice in the National Assembly.
“The select committee formed by President Kenyatta should speed up collection of public views and have the new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in place.
"The fresh commissioners should be in office at least one year before elections for sufficient preparations,” she said.

She noted that due to the rising political temperatures in the country, it would not be prudent to push the elections to December as she expressed fear of political violence and intolerance.
Last month the opposition coalition CORD held demonstrations in Nairobi and other parts of the country seeking the ouster of IEBC commissioners.
The move forced President Uhuru Kenyatta to form a joint select committee to solve the stalemate.
The names of 14 Jubilee and CORD MPs to sit in the committee have since been tabled in Parliament.
Jubilee team is led by Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi while CORD’s is led by Siaya Senator James Orengo.
