Jubilee doesn't need Sonko - MP

15 August 2016, 12:46 Jackson Okata

Nairobi - A Jubilee member of Parliament has claimed that the Jubilee party does not want Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko to be the next Nairobi Governor.

The MP who requested anonymity said that Sonko’s usefulness to the Jubilee ended after the 2013 general elections and he is needed no more.

Speaking Sunday in an exclusive interview in Nakuru, the legislator said that Jubilee will do all it can to prevent Sonko from becoming the Nairobi Governor.

“Sonko was very vital to Jubilee during the 2013 polls especially in Nairobi where he helped UhuRuto marshal votes from the youth but his usefulness ended after the polls and Jubilee does not need him to survive,” he said.

“It is clear that UhuRuto are not keen on having Sonko as the next Governor of Nairobi and I don’t think they can allow it to happen,” he added.

The MP added that Sonko might be the next Nairobi Governor but not on a Jubilee ticket because Jubilee already has its candidate for the post in the forthcoming polls.

“It’s an open secret that Sonko will not be Jubilee's candidate for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat because Jubilee already has a candidate and if he has to be Governor then he will be forced to do so on a different ticket,” he said.

Sonko has insisted that he will not drop out of the race for Nairobi governorship in the 2017 polls and if need be, he will run on an independent ticket.

The scramble for the Jubilee ticket for the Nairobi gubernatorial race has attracted five candidates including Dagoretti south MP Dennis Waweru, nominated MP Johnstone Sakaja, former Starehe MP Margret Wanjiru, as well as Water and Irrigation CS Eugene Wamalwa.
