Journalists protest over harassment, attacks by goons

Nyeri - Nyeri journalists Thursday protested against assaults, harassment and intimidation by politicians, hired goons, police and robbers.
The protests were led by Nyeri Journalists Association chairman Guchu Ndung’u who called for media freedom.
They joined their colleagues countrywide who were protesting of the same and calling for respect of the career.
Ndung’u said the news reporters need protection like other Kenyans, complaining that police and politicians have been intimidating journalists due to unfavorable published news stories and photos.
While singing solidarity songs, condemning the attacks and armed with placards, the journalists expressed fear that threats will increase during forthcoming general elections campaign.
This demonstrations come barely a month after various journalists were attacked by politicians and robbers.
In Nyeri, two female journalists were harassed by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) during a brawl outside the House.
Another journalist was attacked at his house and his leg broken by unknown robbers who also made away with his laptop, recorder and KES.10,000 cash.
In Murang’a County, two journalists were attacked and badly injured by security guards at Kakuzi Farm while providing coverage for a demonstration.
In Thika, two journalists also complained of intimidation by a politician’s security detail over negative publicity against their boss’.
At the eve of the demonstrations, a freelance photojournalist was shot dead by armed robbers at his home in Kitale town.
Last week another journalist died of food poisoning in Coast region.
