IEBC, Judiciary and Parliament have sold their independence to Jubilee - lawyer

11 July 2016, 14:35 Jackson Okata

The Jubilee government has ruined the space and spirit of democracy in the country by pocketing and gaining control of key institutions including the IEBC, Judiciary and Parliament, a lawyer has claimed.

Nakuru human rights lawyer, Harrison Mwangi said that Jubilee has spent billions of shillings in bribing IEBC officials, judges and members of parliament with the aim of swaying them to its side.

He said that the country as it stands lacks true democracy because key institutions are operating at the behest of the government.

“Currently the Judiciary, Parliament and IEBC have lost their independence because the government dictates what they do. The three key institutions agreed to sell their independence to the government,” said Mwangi.

“The greedy judges, IEBC officials and members of parliament could not resist the government billions and as we speak, most of them are dancing to the government tunes,” he said.

Mwangi added that majority of judges, members of parliament and IEBC officials who agreed to sleep with the government became billionaires overnight, something he said is taking Kenya the wrong direction.

“When you don’t have a strong and independent Judiciary, opposition, Parliament and the IEBC then the country is totally messed up because no one will oversight the government,” he said.

“The government has ruined the opposition by buying its members and now controls Parliament and this gives government room to do all the wrong things,” he said.
