IEBC Joint Select Committee illegal, says MP

Nairobi - A Jubilee MP is calling for the disbandment of a joint select committee that was set up to look into electoral reforms in Kenya.
According to Ol Joro Orok MP John Waiganjo, the motion that formed the committee was illegal and its mandate already rests with the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) where he is a member.
“This committee should be disbanded and its members join JLAC. They cannot pretend to handle matters related to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) because that mandate has already been discharged. This is a clear case of duplication of roles,” Waiganjo said.

Waiganjo defended JLAC over claims that it was creating confusion around the IEBC issue after it threw out a petition that was seeking to have the electoral body’s commissioners sent home for alleged incompetence and lack of integrity.
“It is not JLAC that is creating confusion; it is the formation of this select committee because the motion that formed it was not correct in the first place. The mandate that they were supposed to carry out is already with the departmental committee.
“That committee is not responsible for the exit of IEBC commissioners, not responsible for the selection panel to get other commissioners and won’t be responsible for the selection of new commissioners,” said the legislator.
He said as matters stand now, the current IEBC is the only electoral management body because they have been cleared.
