How to spot a cultic church

19 June 2016, 16:34 Solomon Opala

With the mushrooming of churches these days, it is expected that many of them will not be started for genuine reasons of preparing the believers for the kingdom of God.

It is usually difficult to know the difference because even genuine churches have imperfect people who will not always do the right thing.

However, where we draw the line is when the leaders encourage idolatry and have no intention of feeding the sheep but instead feed off them.

Others are full blown cults with the intention of sacrificing the members' lives or destinies in covens. The tell tale signs of an occult mission include the following:

1. Emphasis on giving. The preacher always talks about giving and exalts the doctrine above other fundamental tenets like holiness, love and faith. For one to receive anything from God, they have to part with a particular amount of cash. There are no sinners' prayers but altar calls for cash.

2. Worshiping the Leader. The cult/church leader is esteemed above the Word of God and is not questioned. The faithful have to bow down to greet him or her and cannot question anything that is happening. Anyone challenging the leader usually called a prophet or prophetess is considered anathema. There is hatred directed at any dissenting voice that calls for sobriety.

3. The third thing is that there is no fruit in the congregation. Most of them are still struggling with alcohol, immorality and gossip. Usually, the cult leader sends spirit husbands and wives to the church members and this keeps them bound and dependent on him or her. There is no financial breakthroughs for many, only for a few faithfuls who continue to give to support the lavish lifestyle of the leader.

4. The cult leader uses manipulation. Another sign of deception is when the leader uses intimidation and curses on people who don't agree with them. One sure sign that the Spirit of God has left them is when they are driven by anger and intimidate members with dire consequences in the event you talk ill of them. Anytime you don't feel like attending an evening service but do so because you fear to be asked why you did not come to church and be rebuked by the leader, then you could be under the manipulation of a cult.

The obvious sign is lack of love for the so called enemies of the ministry. When the cult leaders goes for 90 days to curse the people who leave the church instead of calling them to the negotiating table or releasing them well, then you should know that he or she is a wicked person and will do the same for you. It is time to flee as fast as your legs can carry you.
