How to leave a relationship peacefully

25 August 2016, 12:55 Solomon Opala

You have been in a relationship for sometime and you see that it is not heading anywhere. You have gone to all the exiting places and had all the fun but still feel empty and know that it is time to call it quits.

The problem is that your partner is so excited about you and thinks you are the next best invention after penicillin. She is all over you and doesn't want to get your signals of not calling back or texting as often as before.

You have hinted it in your conversations but the person is not ready to let go. It is time to hold the bulls by the horns and state clearly what you feel about the relationship.

You have seen people get stabbed or suffer some other misfortune after saying they wanted out and you wonder if you are the next statistic.

When you weigh your partner and see the possibility of erratic behavoiur, it is wise to make the disconnection progressive and as painless as possible.

You may ask for some time off to deal with personal baggage or reflect on the relationship and what it portents for you in the future.

You can also take advantage of the moments of disagreement to shoe your displeasure in the relationship and your reasons for contemplating an end to it.

Other people blame their parents saying they don't want them to marry from that tribe or that their pastor told them it is not their time for marriage.

Whatever method you use, don't destroy the self esteem or time going round in cycles if not interested.

Try to break in an amicable way and continue being friends as you may need them one day in the future. You may even end up marrying them. Make sure the reasons for opting out are not selfish and the action is mutually beneficial.
