How Kenyan couples deal with space when it comes to marriage?

18 August 2016, 20:46 Shakila Alivitsa

Nairobi - After watching a lot of Kenyan marriages, I have realized why some people use their off days to go back home- alone. In the rural areas, that is what I mean!

They do it in such a way that it is a time when their kids will be at school and their spouse will definitely be at work; leave the one where it is Christmas or some holiday and everyone has to go home.

I first noticed it with my father, whenever he does not want to be around my mother he leaves for the rural home for some ‘urgent’ business. If you ask him, he will not even give you a direct answer. If all fails, it is a funeral of some relative who is close enough that needs him to attend the funeral but not too close that we do not know them or have never heard of them. Then he will stay away for two weeks.

That is how Kenyan couples find space in marriage.

Thing is, it only applies to the men because will the women leave the kids behind with the help while she goes off? Men are so lucky.

So now that we are all grown up and out of the house, my mum is doing the same thing. When she feels like we are irritating her and she does not want to see my dad’s face, she also packs up and leaves on ‘urgent’ business with the help back home.

You cannot run away from the spouse as you would in a normal relationship where you still live apart. You don’t want to see them, fine, you just stay at your place until you come around or they do.

In marriage you share everything; house, car, room, the air you breathe- it can get really annoying.

This is not about love. We all reach a point where we get tired of seeing and dealing with the same face every day, morning, noon and night. Same routine, same habits; that is why when people go back home, they come back in such a better mood!
