Nairobi - A family in Kirinyaga County is undergoing a difficult time after Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) refused to release the body of their mother for burial because of a pending bill.
Hellen Wanjiru Kingongo, 88, from Ndimi village, died from panga cuts she sustained after she was attacked by her last born son on March 29, this year.
The granny went into a comma after being taken to the hospital for specialized treatment.
Her elder son, Joseph Wachira, said after almost a month in a coma, his mother died on May 8 leaving a heavy bill at the hospital.
He said on the fateful day, his mother was within the homestead and at about 6.30 pm she walked to a nearby water tap but before she could turn on the water; the son attacked her from behind with a sharp panga.
“My brother, John Mwaniki, 42, who is the last born in the family and has since been arrested, cut my defenseless mother five times on the head, leaving her groaning in pain with blood gushing out from the deep wounds,” he narrated.
He said the assailant stood a few metres away from his wounded mother as some two grandchildren who witnessed the incident raised an alarm.
Wachira said a neighbour who heard the children screaming rushed to the scene and took the unconscious woman to Kerugoya Level Five hospital.
“Medics there could not handle her case so she was transferred to the ICU in Kenyatta where she remained until death, leaving behind a KES.500, 000 bill,” he said.
We have since met and managed to raise KES. 20, 000 which we forwarded to the hospital thinking they would understand our situation.
He said the hospital management was however adamant that they would only release the body for burial after the KES.500,000 bill was cleared fully.
“We are appealing to Kenyans of goodwill, including our leaders to assist us raise the required amount to enable us give our mother an honourable rest,” he pleaded.
Wachira said the situation is traumatising considering that their mother’s death was as a result of the attack from her own son
