Nyeri Central OCPD Charles Rotich noted that police later tracked the gang and arrested one suspect in Namanga area, along the Kenya-Tanzania border.
He said the gang, estimated to be of more than four members had also hijacked a motorist as fled and escaped in his Subaru car.
“They terrorized the owner of the shop before robbing her of KES.30,000. They then escaped and later hijacked a motorist,” he said.
He said the gang was armed with one rifle, whose make could not be established immediately, and two pistols which they used to threaten the shop owner.
Nobody was injured during the robbery.
Rotich said that after the incident was reported, police tracked the vehicle, and it was impounded at Namanga.
“One suspect who was driving the vehicle was arrested and the area Criminal Investigations Officer has traveled to Nairobi to pick the suspect and the vehicle,” said Rotich.
The OCPD said the gang is suspected to comprise criminals who have been taken to court on various offences and are out on bond.
