Guard injured as 20 armed thugs raid factory

07 March 2016, 14:44 Joseph Njung'eh

Nyeri - A night guard at Gura Coffee Factory in Othaya was injured by an armed gang that was trying to steal coffee.

He sustained injuries on the head, back and both legs as four other guards had been tied together.

The more than 20 armed robbers were attempting to steal 166 bags of coffee from the factory.

They had carried the bags to the factory gate where a waiting lorry was packed but police arrived before they could pack the loot, following a tip by local residents.

Othaya deputy OCPD, Jephason Ali said the thugs escaped in the lorry after seeing the police officers.

Ali however stated that the gang was armed with two guns and metal bars.

He said all the coffee parchment from the factory was transferred to the neighbouring Gatuyaini Coffee mill where police have promised to offer additional security.

He said police have launched investigations to find out if the attempted robbery was an inside job.
