Nairobi - A 76-year-old woman is fighting for her life in hospital after her son brutally attacked her with a machete at Mutinu village in Kirinyaga County.
Mary Muthoni was caught off guard as she tethered her goats within the homestead.
She was rushed to Kerugoya Level Five Hospital as residents torched the house and properties of the 50-year-old son who escaped.
An eye witness said the assailant without any provocation crept behind his unsuspecting mother and started slashing her with the machete several times before she fell down unconscious.
“He attacked my grandmother with a panga, cut her on the back, severed her three fingers before disfiguring her face,” said Dennis Mwangi, a grandson.
The boy who was still in shock narrated how the assailant who is his uncle then picked up the three fingers he had chopped off and walked away as neighbors rushed to the bloody scene to answer the woman’s distress call.
The assailant identified by police as Stephen Mwangi however, escaped the wrath of the irate residents who were baying for his blood.
He managed to run into the compound of a nearby police post where he was immediately arrested and locked in.
The enraged residents later vented their anger on his house which they set on fire and also slashed his banana plantation and also destroyed all valuables on site.
Kirinyaga West Police Boss, Gasper Makau said the assailant has a criminal history having killed his brother 15 years ago.
“We have established that after hacking to death his brother 15 years ago his case was reduced to manslaughter and he only served a seven years jail term,” he said.
Makau said investigations have been launched to establish what might have caused attack on the granny.
